The Northeast Economic Rim is an economic region centered on the central and southern parts of Liaoning Province in Northeast China. It covers Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, as well as the eastern part of Inner Mongolia, namely the five prefectures of Hulunbuir, Hinggan, Tongliao, Chifeng and Xilin Gol. Located at the center of the Northeast Asia and containing abundant natural biological resources and petroleum deposit, the region is of great economic and strategic importance. It covers 1.45 million square kilometers, accounting for 13 percent of the country's total land area. Its GDP in 2010 reached about 4.27 trillion yuan.
The region, once the stronghold of China's state industrial complex, struggled in the 1980s due to structural problems and the country's shift towards a market economy. In 2002, the government launched the Northeast Revitalization campaign to reverse its economic stagnation. In 2010, the Shenyang Economic Zone was established as a pilot zone focusing on modern industrialization. It's now starting a new journey on economic development.
