The Bohai Economic Rim refers to the economic zone encompassing Beijing, Tianjin,Hebei and Shandong Peninsula in the Bohai Sea rim area. The region also includes Shanxi and the central part of Inner Mongolia. There are a lot of important cities such as Tangshan, Taiyuan, Jinan, Qingdao, Baoding and Shijiazhuang. With rich natural resources and closely-knit core city clusters, it's the most robust region in northern China. Following the Pearl River Delta in the south and the Yangtze River Delta in the east, this region has become the third pillar of economic development in China.

The region covers about 0.52 million square kilometers, accounting for about 5 percent of China's total land area. It has been noted for being the national base of manufacturing, heavy industry and chemicals. Its strengths have also been seen in its well-developed communication network, shipping, high-tech, S&T innovation and education, as well as the oil and natural gas deposits in the Bohai Sea. In 2010, its GDP hit 11.9 trillion yuan, making up about 30 percent of the country's total.
