The Yangtze River Delta Economic Rim, one of the largest economic regions in China and one of the six biggest urban agglomerations in the world, mainly comprises Shanghai, southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang provinces. It's centered on Shanghai, complemented by eight cities in Jiangsu, including Nanjing, Suzhou, and Wuxi, and seven cities in Zhejiang, including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Zhoushan and Taizhou. In a broad sense, it also incorporates the area between Yangtze River and Huaihe River, namely the metropolitan region centering on Hefei and ten other cities in Anhui Province.

The region covers about 0.1 million square kilometers, accounting for only 1 percent of China's total land area. However, with its superior geographical location, it has built a sound economic foundation, an advanced communication network, and well-developed secondary, S&T, cultural and educational industries. It ranks highest nationwide in terms of import-export volume, fiscal revenues and volume of retail consumer goods. In 2010, the GDP of the 16 cities of the region reached nearly 7 trillion yuan, accounting for 17.6 percent of the national total. In the coming decades, the region will continue to grow as a comprehensive economic hub, an international gateway for the Asia-Pacific region and a state-of-art manufacturing base.
