Lying on the south bank of the Yangtze River, Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, and is known as the capital of six dynasties in ancient Chinese history. Nanjing has long been a national centre of education, research, transport networks and tourism and is rapidly developing into a sparkling metropolis akin to Shanghai and Beijing.
