The south view from Beigong Forest Park's Wolf Peak shows the local mining industry at work. |
Wolf Peak isn't a peak at all, but it is a lovely spot to stop for a breather. A concession stand sells refreshments and snacks. Feral cats bask in the sun. The park and surrounding areas spread themselves out below, revealing a few of their secrets. Yes, there are impressive swathes of hills of green disappearing into the distance, but there's also a mountain scarred by mining. Industrial vehicles entertainingly mill around the base of the mountain.
Gaining altitude up the twisting staircase, more and more butterflies flit about, enjoying the brightly coloured flowers. Near the peak, the sky becomes expansive, and rows of mountains further west float into view.
The peak is just atop of a rocky cliff, which provides some sharply angled sightlines down the mountain. The mountains west are now fully exposed. Beijing is barely visible, with the old CCTV tower and the China World Trade Center Tower discernable. Also to the north, you can observe convex cooling towers where useful electricity is generated. The jarring mixture of industrial and natural views is best seen from The Back Garden, a lovely flower and rock garden with a circular pathway through it.
