The pathways up and down the mountain in Beigong Forest Park are wonderfully picturesque.

It's a descent trek up the mountain, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. But the park area at the base of the mountain is extensive and picturesque. The nine square kilometer park opened in 2002, so it has a feeling of being quite new and manicured, though the green areas it's built into are fully matured.

The lower park design is exemplary, filled with lovely bridges, courtyards and cloisters. Two placid lakes and bubbling waterways refresh different areas with different architectural styles. Landscaping is artfully completed, contrasting with the wild areas covering the mountainside.

Those looking for more entertainment can visit the mini zoo, a row of cages along the north side of the park. It's not exactly a first rate facility in terms of creature comforts for the creatures, but through bars and chain link fences you can get pretty good viewings of the likes of red pandas, lamas, black bears and more. The monkeys are likely to be the most active of the animals, diligently poring over every inch of their enclosure to find a way out. Surprisingly, baby monkeys can actually squeeze through the chain link fence to freedom, but they tend not to stray far from their parents.
