Ice sports are extremely popular among people living in northeast China since ancient times. The painting entitled Ice-skating Game collected at the National Palace Museum depicts scenes of the Manchu people playing on ice in the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). Nurhaci (1559-1626), the first emperor of the Qing Dynasty, was skilled at skating and organized a skating troop during his conquest, capable of marching 350 kilometers within a day, even while transporting cannons by sledges on ice. During his reign, various events and ceremonies featuring skating, dances, acrobatics, and slaughtering cows and sheep were all held on the surface of the ice. Ice sports were popular across the whole nation during the Qing Dynasty.
