The Yi people worship fire. The annual Torch Festival is to the Yi people what the Spring Festival is to the Han people. Why and how do the Yi people worship fire in their daily lives and during festivals? You can find the answers by watching the play A Re Niu, a large real-life-scene performance, in Xichang, capital of Liangshan where China’s largest Yi ethnic community lives. A Re Niu means the youngest cousin in Yi language and symbols innocence and purity. The play is divided into five scenes, all centering on the main thread “fire.” During the six-day 2016 Sichuan International Cultural Tourism Festival which opens in Xichang today, the play will be staged at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
