She told Kevin Rudd that it is a difficult and tough day and praised him for advocating Australia on the world stage and leading Australia out of world economic crisis.

Meanwhile, Gillard announced that Craig Emerson will take over as foreign minister.

While admitting she had also made mistakes, she said in the future she would do more to advocate Labor's vision and what Labor are achieving for the Australian people.

"United, we can win the election. I'm confident we can win that election," she said.

Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said earlier he congratulated Julia on her strong win and bore no grudges.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard won the Labor caucus, defeating former Prime Minister and former Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd in a 71:31 vote.
