14, Amy Winehouse: Gone too soon

Grammy Award-winning British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse died on July 23, 2011 at age 27.

Known for her beehive hairstyle and distinctive soulful voice, Winehouse was also beset by reports of her controversial and troubled personal life, which detailed drug abuse, self-harming, depression and eating disorders.

Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning and had high levels of alcohol in her blood at the time of her death, which was officially ruled as "death by misadventure."

The genius singer's death caused an outpouring of grief and sent her music back to the top of the record charts: Her album "Back to Black" subsequently became the UK's best selling album so far in the 21st century. An album of previously unreleased material, entitled "Lioness: Hidden Treasures," was released on December 6, 2011.
