10, Hottest time-travel TV series in China

Hunan Satellite TV station began broadcasting Chinese time-travel TV series "Bu Bu Jing Xin" (Startling with Each Step) in Sept. and the drama became an instant hit, securing the highest viewing figures of any TV program in the country. Taiwan has-been star Nicholas Wu became sizzling hot again after played the leading role in this series.

Adapted from a popular novel by Tong Hua, it looks like a sci-fi story about a modern girl who travels back in time to Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) to date several handsome princes. However, it is really an idol drama whose plots often take place in the traditional imperial harem. Young audiences loved to discuss the plots and check the program's historical facts. Some scholar's argued that beautifying the Qing emperor and princes in this kind of TV drama is a corruption of twist of history, while others thought it was simply dramatic license.

As more and more copycat imperial harem TV and spies series took over primetime Chinese television, top officials at the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) decided to act and asked local TV channels to limit such programs. .

A senior official with the Beijing Radio, Film and TV Bureau also announced in December that a specialist censorship department will be established in Beijing next year to monitor and, if necessary, reject low quality screenplays.
