9, World's "first 3D porn" lures tourists to Hong Kong
"3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy", a 2011 Hong Kong 3-D erotic film which is billed as "The world's first 3D porn movie", was released in Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand on April 14, 2011. It is a new installment of the "Sex and Zen" series, but more dark and dramatic, involving scenes of bloody sadomasochism. The film was actually rejected by IMAX due to its subject matter and content.
3D Sex and Zen is an adaptation of the classical novel "The Carnal Prayer Mat" depicting the sexual exploits of a young Ming Dynasty scholar named Wei Yangsheng. It is produced by Stephen Shiu, the executive producer of 3D Sex and Zen's predecessor "Sex and Zen. "It also includes several Japanese adult video stars among its cast.
The film is a Category III film according to Hong Kong's film rating s system. However, there is no ratings system on the Chinese mainland and the film was subsequently banned. ,The film's plot carries the somewhat incongruous "All you need is love" while the 3-D effects are simply showy. However, it still attracted many curious tourists, mainly from the mainland, to Hong Kong to watch the film.
According to Variety, "3D Sex and Zen" took US$351,000 (HK$2,790,000) on the first day alone in Hong Kong, beating Avatar's HK$2.5 million opening gross in the region in 2009. As of June 15, "3D Sex and Zen" had earned in excess of HK$40 million in Hong Kong, the highest in its genre. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film's producers have announced they are going to do a sequel.
