Russia's October Revolution and the Communist Party of China (CPC)

By Qu Qingshan, Director of the Party History Research Center of the CPC Central Committee

The October Revolution had opened a new chapter in the history of mankind and exerted great influences over Russia, China and the rest of the world.

First, without the October Revolution, Marxism-Leninism would not have widely spread across China; and without its wide spread in the country, the CPC would not have been founded in 1921.

Historical records show that Marx and his theories were introduced in Chinese around the late 19th century and the early 20th century. During that time, there was little information about Marxism in China, and therefore the public paid little attention to the idea, and hardly any social impact came out of it.

At that time, China was faced with increasingly serious national crises. It was then when Russia's October Revolution started, and it provided new directions for China's revolution and fresh hope for the Chinese people. Some outstanding Chinese people turned their eyes on Russia and tried to use Marxism-Leninism to observe the future of the nation. They quickly came to a conclusion: They must learn from the Russian revolution and follow the Russians' footsteps. From 1917 to 1921, various research organizations, publications and articles introducing Marxism-Leninism sprouted and spread across the nation. Simply put, the introduction of Marxism in China several years after the October Revolution was more effective than in the previous half century.

There are two basic conditions for the founding of the CPC: First, the wide spread of Marxism-Leninism; and second, the development of the independent workers' movement. The October Revolution was vital to the first condition for the CPC's founding.

Second, the best way to abide by Marxism-Leninism and pursue the spirit of the October Revolution is to promote the localization of Marxism and socialism with Chinese characteristics.

The International Communist Movement after the October Revolution proved that only when Marxism-Leninism is adapted to various national conditions can it prevail and stay dynamic. The history of China's revolution, development and reform under the CPC's leadership is one that is constantly adapting Marxism-Leninism according to the Chinese conditions, promoting the localization of Marxism and advancing theoretical innovations.

As the CPC promotes theoretical innovations, we should always strike a balance between abiding by the original ideals and keeping pace with the times through development and innovation. Every new step the CPC takes forward, its theoretical innovations need also to keep pace. Socialism with Chinese characteristics is not only the theme of the CPC's practice and theory since China's reform and opening up, it is also the major achievement the party and the Chinese people have made through persistent efforts and development in more than 90 years. Therefore, we have every reason to stay confident in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
