Sino-US Disarmament Conference to Start Next Week
The fifth Sino-US conference on arms control, disarmament and nonproliferation will be held in Beijing from July 20 to 21, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue in Beijing Thursday at a regular press conference. Over 50 scholars, experts and government officials from China and the United States will attend the conference.
Agreement Ends Sino-US Semiconductor Dispute
China and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the value-added tax on semiconductors on Wednesday, formally putting an end to the first complaint against China at the World Trade Organization.
Campaign on AIDS Awareness to Start
China has been widely praised at the 15th International AIDS Conference for its practical, goal-oriented policies and the strong leadership it has demonstrated in its fight against the disease. The government is planning a massive HIV/AIDS education campaign as part of its effort to curb the spread of AIDS, and encouraging both domestic and foreign NGOs to participate in the nation's battle.

Rainstorm Hit Shanghai, 7 Killed
A heavy rainstorm which hit Shanghai Monday left seven people dead and over 20 others injured. More than 180 buildings were collapsed during the rainstorm which also tore down a tower crane and some tents at construction sites.
Heavy Sandstorm Rolls Over Gansu
A huge sandstorm swept over an area of about 180,000 square kilometers in northwest China's Gansu Province Monday night, with winds gusting up to force 8. Sandstorms are rarely seen this time of year.
Dongshan Military Drill to Unveil
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) will carry out joint sea, land and air military exercises later this month at Dongshan Island in east China's Fujian Province. Observers regard the exercise as a response to the tension across the Taiwan Straits.
Yao Leads China's Winning Ways
Houston Rockets center Yao Ming notched 22 points to help China rout Croatia last night at the last game of the Four-Nation Basketball Challenge in Beijing. With the victory, China won the title with three wins as it defeated Canada and Brazil in previous two matches. The four teams will play the second leg of the tournament in Xinjiang.
China Protests Against Lee Hsien Loong's Visit to Taiwan
China expressed strong dissatisfaction with and protest against the visit by Lee Hsien Loong, deputy prime minister of Singapore, to Taiwan, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue in Beijing Sunday.
Premier Outlines Strategy on AIDS Control
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao promised Friday that China, as a big and responsible developing country, will make its contribution to the regional and global fight against AIDS. In an article issued prior to the 15th International AIDS Conference to be held in Bangkok next week, Wen called on the whole Chinese society to prevent and control the disease, saying AIDS is a major public health and social issue facing the international community.
Strong Rainstorm Drowned Beijing
A sudden strong rainstorm hit Beijing on Saturday afternoon and caused collapses of six houses and injured two people in addition to traffic jam in the downtown areas. The storm brought over 50 mm rainfall to the downtown places.
