Established in December 1984, the Tianjin Economic-technological Development Area (TEDA) was one of the earliest national-level development zones in the country.

Through 27 years of development, TEDA has fostered nine leading industries: information technology; automobile and machinery manufacturing; bio-medicine; food and beverages; new materials, new energy and environmental protection; equipment manufacturing; petrochemical; aviation and modern services.

By the end of 2010, TEDA had approved foreign investments by 4,870 enterprises from 74 countries and regions, including world-famous companies such as Motorola, Samsung, Panasonic, Toyota, Coca-Cola and Kyocera, with a combined value of US$62.21 billion. Its gross industrial output reached 510.13 billion yuan (US$79.85 billion) last year. A total of 78 Fortune Global 500 enterprises have invested in 166 projects in the area.
