Situated east of Guangzhou, the Guangzhou Development District is composed of five districts, covering a total area of 78.92 square kilometers. It was one of the first national-level development zones, established in 1984.

In the GDD, six leading industries are developing rapidly, including chemicals, information technology, bio-medicine, food and beverages, metallurgy and processing and automobiles and parts.

A number of famous multinationals have invested in the area, including P&G, Amway, Colgate, DuPont, Sony, Volkswagen, Panasonic, Pepsi, Nestle, Watsons, Wrigley and Honda.

In 2010, the GDD's gross industrial output value reached 422.8 billion yuan (US$66.18 billion), up from 160.8 billion yuan (US$25.17 billion) in 2005, with an average annual growth rate of 21.45 percent. Its total financial revenue increased to 38.86 billion yuan (US$6.08 billion) from 15.7 billion yuan (US$2.46 billion) in 2005, with an average annual growth rate of 19.91 percent.
