Located in east China's Shandong Province, the Qingdao Development Area (QDA) was approved by the State Council in October 1984 and established in March 1985, with a planned area of 20.02 square kilometers.

QDA is home to a wide variety of industries including home appliance and automobile manufacturing, shipping, shipbuilding, logistics, aviation, petrochemical, tourism and education. Foreign contractors from 57 countries and regions have made investments in the area, including 67 projects with Forbes Global 500 enterprises. Foreign capital of US$10.64 billion has been used. Famous domestic enterprises such as Haier, Hisense, Sinopec and PetroChina have also set up shop in the area.

In 2010, the QDA's trade volume reached US$7.15 billion, 25.8 percent higher than the year before. From January to May this year, the volume reached US$3.71 billion, 43.2 percent higher than the same period last year.
