Hubei Province, located in Central China, is an economic center and transportation hub in the country. Its pillar industries include auto, machinery, iron and steel, oil, power generation, textiles, electronics and information, tourism, food processing and building materials.

Its GDP rose from 0.76 trillion yuan(US$95.34 billion) in 2006 to 1.6 trillion yuan(US$236.35 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 27,906 yuan(US$4,122), a 108.9 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped from 1.462 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 1.183 tons in 2010, down 19.08 percent.

The hi-tech industries in the province posted 537.5 billion yuan (US$79.4 billion) in total output and 170.24 billion yuan (US$25.15 billion) in added value in 2010, 2.6 times and 2.5 times that of 2006, respectively. The province's R&D spending hit 26.41 billion yuan(US$3.9 billion) in 2010, 2.8 times that of 2006.

The foreign direct investment surged by 65.3 percent from US$2.45 billion in 2006 to US$4.05 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$11.74 billion in 2006 to US$25.91 billion in 2010, of which export was US$14.47 billion, up by 109.2 percent from 2006.
