Tianjin Municipality, a modern mega-city located in northern China, is an important industrial base in China. Its competitive industries include aeronautics and astronautics, equipment manufacturing, auto, petro-chemicals, electronic information, bio-medicine, new energy, new materials and textiles.
Tianjin's GDP rose from 0.45 trillion yuan(US$56.45 billion) in 2006 to 0.92 trillion yuan (US$135.9 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 72,994 yuan(US$10,783), a 73.2 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 22.73 percent from 1.069 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 0.826 tons in 2010.
The total value of hi-tech industrial output hit 510.08 billion yuan (US$75.35 billion) in 2010, 1.9 times that of 2006, while the added value was 132.83 billion yuan (US$19.62 billion) in 2010. The province's R&D spending hit 22.96 billion yuan(US$3.39 billion) in 2010, 2.4 times that of 2006.
The foreign direct investment surged by 162.7 percent from US$4.13 billion in 2006 to US$10.85 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$64.57 billion in 2006 to US$82.2 billion in 2010, of which export was US$37.52 billion, 1.1 times that of 2006.
