Shandong is a coastal province famous for its marine resources, petro-chemicals, bio-medicine, home appliances, information tech and modern logistics. The province is one of the most important bases for production of grain and cash crops, including cotton, wheat and peanut. It's also the top gold production base in China, accounting for about one fourth of the country's total output. Presently, the province is making great efforts to develop the marine biological industry.

Shandong saw its GDP rise from 2.19 trillion yuan (US$274.72 billion) in 2006 to 3.92 trillion yuan(US$579.07 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 41,106 yuan(US$6,072), 1.74 times that of 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 16.73 percent from 1.231 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 1.025 tons in 2010.

The large-scale hi-tech industries in the province posted 3.16 trillion yuan (US$466.8 billion) in total value and 820.76 billion yuan (US$121.24 billion) in added value in 2010, 3.1 times and 3.2 times that of 2006, respectively. The province's R&D spending hit 67.2 billion yuan (US$9.93 billion) in 2010, up by 187.1 percent from 2006.

The foreign direct investment declined by 10.1 percent from US$10.2 billion in 2006 to US$9.17 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$95.29 billion in 2006 to US$188.95 billion in 2010, of which, export was US$104.25 billion, 1.8 times that of 2006.
