2. Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall
Opened in 1983, the Cao Xueqin (1715- 1764) Memorial Hall is the residence of the author of the "Dream of the Red Chamber" from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
Situated in the Fragrant Hills area, the residence is surrounded by many scenic spots such as the Nirvana Buddha to the north, the Xianglu Mountain to the west, and the Beijing Botanical Garden to the south. The so-called Red Mansion is divided into five parts with 12 Qing dynasty-style rooms where Cao used to live. According to Cao Xueqin scholars, the tranquil natural scenery was a great source of inspiration for the writer. In the hall, visitors can have a look at Cao's bookcases and poems inscribed on the wall, as well as his living room and study.
The memorial hall is open free of charge to the public, with free guided tours from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Opening hours: 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. in summer; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in winter
