Li Na made history as the first Chinese and Asian player to win a tennis Grand Slam singles title when she triumphed over defending champion Francesca Schiavone at the French Open. Her victory has inspired a sense of national pride and sudden surge of interest in tennis among Chinese people. Despite her subsequent dip in form following her success, Li Na has continued to accrue sponsorship deals and endorsements. Commercial activities may be a double-edged sword for sports stars, but Li Na's fans would rather hear her witty remarks made in victory and holding her trophy aloft than see her smiling face on the cover of magazines and in commercials.
