A 20-year-old Chinese female microblogger provoked national doubt about and outrage against charitable organizations. Like any vain youngster, she flaunted her extravagant lifestyle – posting photos of villas, luxury sports cars, horses, and designer handbags to her Sina Weibo account, a Twitter-like social networking site. Curiously, her accredited title on Weibo was "general manager at a branch of the Red Cross Society." This triggered a nationwide debate on the transparency of charitable organizations and a sharp drop in donations by individuals and organizations to the RCS. This has put national charity institutions in crisis management mode as they seek to restore the public's confidence in them. Many people blame Guo Meimei for her ostentatious. On the other hand, though, she has provided an opportunity to improve the supervision of Chinese charitable organizations.
