Ding Cong (1916-2009) |
A famous Chinese caricaturist, several of Ding's comic strips became published in Dushu (Reading) magazine. His creations, mostly satires of social phenomena, gained popularity among Chinese intellectuals. Some of Ding's caricatures were published when he was just 17 years old. Despite an early opposition from his caricaturist father, Ding made his career by drawing comic series and fiction figures from novels written by celebrated Chinese authors, such as Lu Xun (1881-1936) and Lao She (1899-1966). One of his best-known comic strips was called "Reflection of Society." Ding had to stop his work during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), when he was charged as a "rightist." He continued drawing once the revolution was over. He died of cerebral thrombus on May 26, 2009, at the age of 93.
