The group comprises more than 2.13 million people. Mainly distributed in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Hunan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Jiangxi provinces, the Yao people generally use their own spoken language and the Han Chinese script.
