Jiangsu, a province situated at the center of the eastern coast of China, is mainly focused on machinery, electronics and information, petro-chemicals, shipping and auto for its economic development. The more traditional industries, including farming, food production and textiles, also play an important part as well. The province has been the largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) since 2006 in the country. It has been making great efforts to develop the high-tech sector.
Jiangsu shows great potential for economic growth. Its GDP rose from 2.17 trillion yuan (US$272.21 billion) in 2006 to 4.14 trillion yuan (US$611.57 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 52,840 yuan (US$7,806), an 85.2 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 17.62 percent from 0.891 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 0.734 tons in 2010.
The total output of hi-tech industry was 3.04 trillion yuan (US$449.07 billion) in 2010, a 38.1 percent increase from 2009 and 2.95 times that of 2006. The number accounted for 33 percent of the aggregate of the large-scaled industrial enterprises. The province's R&D spending hit 85.79 billion yuan (US$12.67 billion) in 2010, up by 147.9 percent from 2006.
The foreign direct investment surged by 63.5 percent from US$17.43 billion in 2006 to US$28.5 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$284 billion in 2006 to US$466 billion in 2010, of which export was US$270.6 billion, up by 68.7 percent from 2006.
