Guangdong, a province known for its manufacturing and tertiary industries, is the first in China to have the local GDP exceed 1 trillion yuan (US$120.82 billion) in 2001. It has been ranked top in many economic indicators among the 31 provincial regions on the Chinese mainland for more than 10 years. The province's key industries include electronics and information, machinery, petro-chemicals, textiles and garment, food processing, building materials, paper-making, pharm and auto.

Guangdong's GDP rose from 2.66 trillion yuan (US$333.68 billion) in 2006 to 4.6 trillion yuan(US$679.52 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 44,736 yuan(US$6,608), a 56.8 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 13.88 percent from 0.771 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 0.664 tons in 2010.

The total output of hi-tech industry rose from 1.2 trillion yuan (US$146.49 billion) in 2005 to 3 trillion yuan (US$443.16 billion) in 2010, with an average annual growth rate of 20.1 percent between 2006 and 2010. The large-scale hi-tech industries posted 2.11 trillion yuan (US$311.69 billion) in total output and 485.06 billion yuan (US$71.65 billion) in added value in 2010, respectively. The province's R&D spending hit 80.87 billion yuan (US$11.95 billion) in 2010, up by 158.4 percent from 2006.

The foreign direct investment surged by 39.6 percent from US$14.51 billion in 2006 to US$20.26 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$527.2billion in 2006 to US$784.9 billion in 2010, of which export was US$453.19 billion, up by 50 percent from 2006.
