Beijing, the capital of China, is the political, cultural and educational center of the country. Its tertiary industry accounts for more than 70 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).  Finance and commerce play a key role in its economic development. Beijing is striving to further develop modern services in financing, information, S&T, transport and logistics. It's also focused on modern manufacturing sectors, including the high value-added ones such as electronics and information, auto, electromechanical integration equipment, biological engineering, new energies and environmental protection equipment.

Beijing's GDP rose from 0.81 trillion yuan (US$101.61 billion) in 2006 to 1.41 trillion yuan (US$208.29 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 75,943 yuan (US$11,218), a 45.9 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 23.42 percent from 0.76 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 0.582 tons in 2010.

The hi-tech industries posted an added value of 269.54 billion yuan (US$39.82 billion) in 2010, a two-fold increase from 2005, and accounting for about 20 percent of the municipality's GDP. The province's R&D spending hit 82.18 billion yuan (US$12.14 billion) in 2010, up by 89.8 percent from 2006.

The foreign direct investment surged by 39.8 percent from US$4.55 billion in 2006 to US$ 6.36 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$158.03 billion in 2006 to US$301.66 billion in 2010, of which export was US$55.44 billion, up by 46.1 percent from 2006.
