Shanghai Municipality is one of the most important economic, financial and trade centers in China as well as in the world. It's also the center of high-tech, fashion, conventions and shipping in the country. Its rapid economic growth is mainly supported by finance, commerce, complete equipment, auto, information tech, as well as creative industry.

Shanghai's GDP rose from 1.06 trillion yuan (US$132.97 billion) in 2006 to 1.72 trillion yuan(US$254.08 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 76,074 yuan (US$11,238), a 38.7 percent increase from 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP dropped by 18.44 percent from 0.873 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 0.712 tons in 2010.

The total output of hi-tech industry amounted to 885.9 billion yuan (US$130.87 billion) in 2010, a 23 percent increase over 2009. The province's R&D spending hit 48.17 billion yuan(US$7.12 billion) in 2010, up by 86.1 percent from 2006.

The foreign direct investment surged by 56.4 percent from US$7.11 billion in 2006 to US$11.12 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$227.49 billion in 2006 to US$366.87 billion in 2010, of which export was US$180.78 billion, up by 59.2 percent from 2006.
