Zhejiang, dubbed as the "Land of Fish and Rice", is an eastern coastal province famous for its natural resources, beautiful landscapes and well-developed economy. Its key industries include electromechanical, refined chemicals, textiles, power generation, food, construction materials, modern telecommunications, as well as fishery and marine industry.
Its GDP rose from 1.57 trillion yuan(US$196.94 billion) in 2006 to 2.77 trillion yuan(US$409.2 billion) in 2010, when the GDP per capita was 51,711 yuan(US$7,639), 1.7 times that of 2006. Its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP declined by 17.01 percent, from 0.864 tons of standard coal in 2006 to 0.717 tons in 2010.
The total output of hi-tech industry amounted to about 1 trillion yuan(US$147.72 billion) in 2010, a 124.7 percent increase over 2005. The added value of high-tech manufacturing industry was 239.6 billion yuan (US$35.39 billion) in 2010, an 18.5 percent increase from 2009. The province's R&D spending hit 49.42 billion yuan (US$7.3 billion) in 2010, 2.2 times that of 2006.
The foreign direct investment surged by 23.7 percent from US$8.89 billion in 2006 to US$11 billion in 2010. Its foreign trade value rose from US$139.15 billion in 2006 to US$253.53 billion in 2010, of which export was US180.46 $billion, up by 78.9 percent from 2006.
