Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine, was sentenced to seven years in prison after she was found guilty of abuses of power by a local court on November 11. The case centered on a 2009 gas deal with Russia. Placed third on Forbes Magazine's list of the world's 100 Most Powerful Women for 2005, Tymoshenko was a successful businesswoman and controversial politician. But her bittersweet relationships with President Viktor Yushchenko and other Orange allies have paralyzed the country along with a deep economic crisis following the Orange Revolution. It's thought that the verdict against Tymoshenko could further worsen Ukraine's relations with western countries and Russia.
