UN Promotes Eurasian Continental Link
The United Nations will continue to support economic cooperation among regions along the new Eurasian Continental Bridge, according to UN Resident Coordinator in China Khalid Malik at a two-day international forum on promoting economic ties among regions along the New Silk Road (NSR).
Bad Weather Ravages China
No casualties have been reported in Fujian Province after the year's second strongest typhoon hit the province on Wednesday. However, least 10 people have been killed since Tuesday in Sichuan Province, with four others injured and seven still missing following heavy rain that caused mudflows and landslides.
World Oil Price Spike Hits Chinese Market
The National Development and Reform Commission of China Wednesday raised the price of refined oil products for the first time in three months owing to the oil price spike on the international market. The move also spells out relief for domestic refineries that have been suffering losses because of rising crude oil costs.
Typhoon Aere to Hit Fujian, Jiangxi
Typhoon Aere, the second strongest storm to hit southeastern China this year, is expected to land in Fujian Province on Wednesday afternoon and stay throughout the night. The Ministry of Civil Affairs issued emergency typhoon warnings to Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces on Tuesday, evacuating nearly a quarter of a million people from coastal areas in Zhejiang.
Dixie Mission Remembered in Beijing
Sixty years have passed since the young American men who made up the historic Dixie Mission landed in Yan'an to establish the first official US contact with the Chinese Communists. On Monday, relatives and former members of the mission and the Chinese veterans who worked with them, together with scholars and diplomats, met in Beijing to reminisce and discuss the significance of that connection.
Beijing Begins Issuing Green Cards
Ten long-term foreign residents became the first applicants for China's new "green cards" on Monday, following the August 15 implementation of a new regulation on permanent residence. The long-awaited unified permit will be issued to current holders of resettlement or permanent residence certificates, and to new applicants who meet the criteria for one of four categories.
Nine Laws to Be Amended to Limit Govt Power
China's legislature is considering amendments to nine laws, including the highway law, the corporate law and the auction law, to limit and further legalize government's involvement in social and economic affairs.
First LOF to Be Issued Tuesday
China's first Listed Open-ended Fund will be issued on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange by Southern Fund Management Co. on Tuesday. The fund, which can be listed and traded in the stock exchange, is expected to appeal to small and medium-sized investors because of the lower transaction cost and greater efficiency.
Wu Yi No. 2 on Forbes' Top Women List
Vice Premier Wu Yi is the world's second most powerful woman, just after US national security advisor Condoleezza Rice and ahead of Sonia Gandhi and Laura Bush, according to the September 6 issue of Forbes. The magazine's list of the world's top 100 women also includes three leading Chinese women.
Li/Sun Win Historic Gold for China in Tennis
Li Ting and Sun Tiantian, the top Chinese pair in the women's doubles, won for their country the first-ever gold medal in tennis, beating Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual from Spain 6-3, 6-3 in the final at the Olympic Games in Athens on Sunday.
Birth Centenary of Deng Xiaoping Commemorated
At a grand gathering to mark the birth centenary of the late leader Deng Xiaoping in Beijing Sunday, Chinese President Hu Jintao described Deng Xiaoping as a great man of the world whose scientific judgment of the modern times and deep vision into the international situation provide a basis for China's domestic and foreign policies.
