3rd ICAPP Opens in Beijing
The Third International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) opened in Beijing on Friday morning. The biennial conference provides a venue for participants from throughout the region to discuss issues of mutual concern and interest. More than 300 delegates and observers from 83 political parties and 34 countries are attending the three-day event.
State Council Approves Edmund Ho's Second Term
The State Council ratified Edmund Ho Hau Wah's reelection as chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region on Wednesday. Premier Wen Jiabao commented that under Ho's leadership, Macao has realized social stability, security and comfort for its residents and sustainable, rapid economic development. Ho's second term will begin on December 20, 2004.
UN-HABITAT Honors Two Chinese Cities
Two Chinese cities have been recognized by the United Nations Human Settlements Program for their efforts to improve living conditions. Xiamen won the Habitat Scroll of Honor, the UN's highest award in the field of improving urban environments, and Tangshan won the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment for its cleanup of the Tangshan Southern Coal Mining Area.
Hu Meets Arroyo, Agreements Signed
Chinese President Hu Jintao called for deepened cooperation in agricultural technology, machinery, infrastructure and development of resources between China and the Philippines on Wednesday. He was meeting with visiting Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who is in Beijing for a three-day state visit. The two countries signed five agreements yesterday.
New Regs Spur Charity Foundation Reform
The Regulations on Management of Foundations that went into effect in June are helping to standardize operations and management of charity foundations nationwide. Pursuant to the new regulation, the Shanghai Charity Foundation is changing its role from project coordinator to fund manager. Other moves include making accounts more transparent, streamlining management and reducing direct government influence.
Seminar Recalls Harbin's Thriving Jewish Community
The International Seminar on Jewish History and Culture in Harbin opened Tuesday morning. The conference, which has drawn more than 100 scholars from around the world, provides a chance for former residents of Harbin's Jewish community and their descendants to meet as well as to give the world a closer view of the city's long and warm relationship with the Jewish people.
Alternative Energy Supplies Explored
China is exploring new ways to exploit its rich renewable energy resources, such as wind, terrestrial heat and tidal energy. The Policy Research Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is addressing the issue, and the government is drafting a bill to promote the use of renewable energy that should go to the National People's Congress for passage at the end of the year.
China Launches Science Satellite
China launched a recoverable science experimental satellite into a preset orbit, atop a Long March 2C carrier rocket from a launch center in northwest China on Sunday. The satellite is mainly for space scientific research, land surveying, mapping and other scientific experiments.
China Southern Seeks to Join Global Alliance
An agreement signed this past weekend lays the groundwork for China Southern Airlines to become one of the members of SkyTeam, one of the world's leading global airline alliances. It is the first time a domestic carrier has sought to join such an international alliance, and the link stands to benefit the airline, the alliance and China's civil aviation as a whole.
Athens Olympic Games Come to End
The closing ceremony for the 28th Olympic Games was held at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece, August 29. With the handover of the Olympic Flag to Wang Qishan, the mayor of Beijing, host city of the 2008 Olympics, President of the International Olympic Committee Dr. Jacques Rogge declared the end of the Athens Games after 16 days of competitions.
