ADB Loan to Develop Road Network in Hunan
The Asian Development Bank has approved a US$312.5 million loan to develop the road network in western Hunan Province, a largely mountainous rural area. Improved roadways are viewed as a prerequisite to tackling widespread poverty in the region, and will facilitate trade, tourism and transport while improving safety.
More Village Women Getting Political
In a case of killing two birds with one stone -- advancing rural democracy and improving the status of rural women -- the Ministry of Civil Affairs is encouraging more women to get involved in grass-roots politics. To this end, in August it published a guidebook on participation in village governance specifically geared toward women.
China Sends 2 Satellites into Preset Orbits
China launched two scientific experiment satellites into space from a north China space center atop a Long March 4-B rocket carrier earlier Thursday. The two satellites are used to probe space environment, radiation, its effects and space physical environment parameters, and conduct other related space experiments.
China to Go Further Than WTO Promises
Vice Premier Wu Yi pledged on Wednesday that China will further improve the investment environment to attract more foreign investors at the opening of the 8th China International Fair of Investment and Trade in Xiamen.
'Super Rice' Acreage, Yields to Increase
High-yield "super rice," which promises to increase China's grain output substantially, will be planted on four million hectares of farmland next year, says the Ministry of Agriculture. Under ideal conditions, super rice yields 10.5 tons per hectare, compared with an average of 6.5 tons per hectare for conventional strains. Work is under way to improve the strain further, with target yields of 13.5 tons per hectare by 2010.
China Not to Share Gas Tapping Info with Japan
China is justified not to share the details of its natural gas exploration in the East China Sea with Japan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said Tuesday, adding it's unreasonable for Japan to ask for the information as the exploration was conducted in China's offshore area.
Olympics Facilities Sail New Financing Course
Government investment will account for only a small proportion of the total capital outlay for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Open bidding, ownership sharing and leasing of operating rights will relieve the municipal government of a number of risks and burdens.
Campaign Targets IPR Protection
China has launched a national campaign to protect intellectual property rights. The campaign, which will continue until August next year, will target commodity imports and exports, expositions, fairs and wholesale markets in addition to trademarks, copyrights and patents.
Floods Kill 76 in SW China, 79 Missing
The death toll from rainstorm-triggered floods in southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality has risen to 76 early Monday, with at least 79 missing. Flooding and mudslides have stranded hundreds of people, many of them scattered widely through the mountainous rural areas.
CPC's Governing Capability Widely Recognized
Hu Jintao, Chinese President and General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, has said the key to successfully handling affairs in China lies in the CPC. Hu's remarks were echoed by Bidisha Ershad, Adviser to the President of the Bangladesh National Party, who attributed the rapid growth of the Chinese economy to the CPC's leadership.
