F1 Stars Arrive in Shanghai
Formula One is ready to take China by storm when the nation hosts a grand prix race for the first time this Sunday in Shanghai. Ferrari superstar Michael Schumacher, appearing together with his teammate Rubens Barrichello at a press conference on Wednesday, said that there is good reason to be excited about the race.
Ferry Sinks, Killing at Least 12
Twelve people were killed and 36 others are missing after a river ferry capsized Thursday in Linyi County, north China's Shanxi Province. The ferry was carrying 65 passengers -- all local villagers bound for flooded land along the Yellow River to pick cotton.
China, Kyrgyzstan Tap Cooperation Potential
In a joint statement signed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Kyrgyz Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev on Tuesday and released Wednesday, the two countries pledged to fully tap potential areas of cooperation such as politics, economy, trade, security and culture.
French Culture Year Starting Soon
French Culture Year in China will begin on October 10 with a visit by French President Jacques Chirac and a spectacular variety show in the Forbidden City. Altogether, 179 events and programs will take place during the year to show China a new, creative France and to strengthen ties between the two nations. The exchange of culture years is being held to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations.

Vice Premier Huang Ju said Tuesday that the reform of China's state-owned commercial banks will impact the whole financial system and must succeed during a speech at the inauguration of China Construction Bank (CCB) Limited, which is one of the first batch of state-owned banks for trial share-holding reforms.

Hu Jintao succeeded Jiang Zemin as chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the Fourth Plenum of the 16th CPC Central Committee, which concluded Sunday. The plenum also approved Xu Caihou to become CMC vice-chairman and Chen Bingde, Qiao Qingchen, Zhang Dingfa and Jing Zhiyuan CMC members.

Athens 2004 Paralympic Games Opens
The 12nd Summer Paralympic Games formally unfolded Friday night at the 70,000-seated Athens Olympic Stadium. The parading Chinese Paralymians display a five-meter-long red banner with English characters "Hello, Hellas, Welcome to China 2008!"
