Beijing Food Prices Carry on Rising
The capital is expected to continue to see food prices rise until the end of this year to early next year. The increases have greatly affected poorer people in the city, where the gap between rich and poor keeps growing. Overall, Beijing is cooling down from the overheated economic growth of earlier this year.
One Hostage Killed, One Freed in Pakistan
Pakistani forces carried out a military operation on Thursday to free the two Chinese engineers held hostage in its northwestern tribal region freeing one but leaving the other dead. All the abductors were also killed.
Putin: Sino-Russian Ties to Grow
Russia will strengthen the strategic partnership with China and the two sides will address any emerging problems through mutual consultation, said Russian President Vladimir Putin during an interview with Chinese media in Moscow on October 11.

CASS Economists Expect 9.4% Growth This Year
Economists at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences forecast an economic growth rate of 9.4 percent this year, slowing slightly to 8.9 percent next year. While the overall state of the economy is good, some nagging problems remain, such as rising prices and energy and transportation bottlenecks. More optimistic, the National Development and Reform Commission believes that growth in consumer prices has peaked for the year.
China, France Issue a Joint Press Communique
China and France issued on Sunday evening a joint press communique, saying the two countries will join hands in promoting a world which is safer, more united and shows more respect to diversity. Both the countries also agreed to promote stable development of Sino-European Union and Asia-Europe relations.
China Expresses Concerns Over Kidnapped Nationals
China showed its deep concerns for the safety of two kidnapped Chinese engineers in Pakistan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan told Xinhua on Saturday.
Hu, Chirac Hold Talks
Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting French President Jacques Chirac held talks in Beijing, exchanging views on bilateral ties and international and regional issues of mutual concern. Hu raised a four-point proposal on promoting Sino-French ties during the talks.
China, Vietnam Reaffirm Demarcation Agreements
China and Vietnam vowed to honor their commitments to the Beibu Bay demarcation and fishery cooperation agreements and the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea in a joint communiqué released on Friday during Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to the country.
French President Begins China Tour
French President Jacques Chirac began his five-day state visit to China on Friday with a stop in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, before traveling on to Beijing, where he will meet government leaders and attend the opening ceremonies of French Culture Year in China. The focus of Chirac's trip will be on expanding economic and trade ties with China.
