Rehabilitating China's Killer Coal Mines
On October 20, three major coal mine accidents occurred in China, killing nearly 200 workers. Just two days later, another 15 died in a gas explosion in a Guizhou Province mine. People's Daily interviewed Professor Wang Deming of the China University of Mining and Technology to gain a clearer picture of why these disasters take place with such alarming frequency.
Translation Achievements Exhibition Opens
China's first-ever exhibition of translation achievements opened at the Military Museum in Beijing on Thursday. Translators and interpreters have played a vital role in the development of China and the world for many centuries, and for China have become particularly crucial since it embarked on its reform and opening program more than 20 years ago.
China-ASEAN Expo to Boost Cooperation
The First China-ASEAN Expo opened on Wednesday in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Expo -- the brainchild of Premier Wen Jiabao -- offers a new platform for cooperation between China and ASEAN countries in trade, investment, economy and technology. Ahead of the opening of the event, Vice Premier Wu Yi met with top leaders from ASEAN member countries.
Gov't Freezes Retail Oil Prices
Although crude oil prices have recently soared on international markets, the National Development and Reform Commission has ruled out hiking prices at the pump for gasoline and diesel oil in the near future. The central government holds that oil price increases would fan inflation and undermine the efforts to cool the economy, but the freeze on retail prices increases the already-weighty burden on refiners.
Chinese, French Scientists Work Closely Together
The European Union's 30-satellite Galileo navigation system, in which China is now a participant, will provide safe, reliable and accurate navigational information for Chinese users in civil aviation, railways, waterways and road transport. Scientists from France and China discussed Galileo and other cooperative projects on the opening day of the China-France Science and Technology Innovation Forum.

China Closes 1,600 Internet Cafes
In an inspection of some 1.8 million Internet cafes nationwide, China closed down 1,600 outlets between February and August and imposed 100 million yuan (US$12 million) in fines for violations such as allowing minors to play violent or adult-only games.
Rogge Upbeat About Olympic Venues Construction
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge on Saturday spoke highly of Beijing's preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games after having an inspection tour of venues for the Games. Rogge, who arrived here Saturday morning, is on his third visit to Beijing.
