Christmas Comes to China
A historic chapel at Mount Lushan, Jiangxi Province will be open to tourists over the Christmas holidays, whilst the world's biggest Santa Claus snow sculpture goes on display in Changchun, Jilin Province.
More Money for Pure Science
The government will raise investment in pure science research to 20 percent of total research and development expenditure, the vice minister of science and technology announced Thursday. State and private companies as well as individuals will also be encouraged to fund research.
Nature Reserves Need Improved Management
Although China now operates nearly 2,000 nature reserves, with the number skyrocketing in recent years, experts at the Chinese Academy of Sciences say that good management, not high numbers, must be the country's focus going forward.

Fire Ravages Market, 69 Injured

Garfield Owner Wins Infringement Case
In a copyright dispute over world-famous comic-strip cat Garfield, a Beijing court has ordered a Shanxi Province publishing house to pay US$25,000 to Paws, Inc., for copyright infringement. The Chinese company, which says that it paid for use of the Garfield images and stories through an agent, may still appeal the verdict.
Hu Toasts Macao Five Years After Return
President Hu Jintao called for proper handling of problems concerning the implementation of the "one country, two systems" policy Monday while attending a celebration of the anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of its government's second term.
Sunken Ferry Kills 10 Students; Owner Arrested
The final death toll in Friday's ferryboat sinking in Shaanxi Province has been confirmed at 10. Twenty-one of the 23 people on board when the boat broke apart and sank were middle school students. The owner, who had been ordered to stop operating the boat in October, has been arrested.
More Riot Police to Go to Haiti Next April
China will send its second group of riot police to Haiti next April, according to the Public Security Bureau of south China's Guangdong Province.

A strategic international business marketing and partnering initiative for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games was officially launched on Friday.
More Cash Allotted to Cut Poverty
Chinese official Friday said that government will input more funds for poverty alleviation. The World Bank, which provided loans for many of China's poverty reduction projects, also pledged its continued support.
