Gas Pipeline Quenches Fuel Thirst
A new pipeline running over 4,000 kilometers from Xinjiang to Shanghai went into operation yesterday. It is hoped to meet greater demand for clean fuel in the Yangtze River Delta region. President Hu Jintao sent a message to the completion ceremony.
Farming Trade Deficit Hits Record
The Ministry of Agriculture expects an unprecedented US$5.5 billion deficit in agricultural trade this year, with animal product trade already US$855 million in the red through November. One ministry expert points a finger at non-tariff trade barriers, but admits that supply-demand trends and domestic policies may keep the sector running a deficit in the years ahead despite the negative impact on Chinese farmers.
Anti-secession Law Reflect Common Will
The anti-secession law to promote the peaceful reunification of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan will reflect the common will of all Chinese people, said China's top legislator at the closing meeting of the 10th National People's Congress Standing Committee. The draft of the law will be submitted for deliberation at the third full session of the 10th NPC, slated for March next year.
Panels to Monitor Export Orders
As the textile quota-free era arrives on Saturday, exporters have decided to form six price coordinating panels in a bid for self-regulation. Antarctic Team Halfway to Dome
China's 21st Antarctic expedition team, headed to the polar continent's highest icecap, is halfway to its goal. Setting out on December 14, the 12-member team is traveling 1,300 kilometers inland from Zhongshan Station on the east coast to Dome A. The expedition is expected to be finished in 70 days.
President Sends Condolences to Quake Victims
President Hu Jintao has sent messages of condolence to leaders of seven Asian countries hit by Sunday's earthquake and tsunami. More than 40 relief personnel have been detailed to stand by for assignment to hard-hit Indonesia.
China Joins Groups Against Money Laundering
China plans to work closer with other countries as it ups the ante in the fight against money laundering and terrorism funding, said Ling Tao, director of the Bank of China's bureau in charge of countering money laundering. Meanwhile, China has applied to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to become an observer, China's central bank the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Friday.
Foreign Trade Soars 750 Times in 55 Years
Chinese foreign trade has increased 750 times since the People's Republic of China was founded 55 years ago, serving as a major engine for the growth of world trade, said Bo Xilai, minister of commerce in Beijing on Friday.
Cities Raise Water Price
More than half of Chinese cities raised their water prices this year, aiming to fight the country's severe water shortage by raising citizen's water-saving awareness. Water shortage and water pollution will be major challenges for the country to realize its goal of building up an affluent society in 20 years, said Wang Shucheng, Minister of Water Resources, at an ongoing national water resources management meeting taking place in Beijing.
